Chapter 1
كل صيف، تزور إليف جدتها في قرية صغيرة.
Every summer, Elif visits her grandmother in a small village.
تصنع الجدة أفضل حساء طماطم في العالم.
Grandma makes the best tomato soup in the world.
لكنها لا تقول أبدًا ما بداخله. تقول دائمًا: «إنه سرّ.»
But she never says what is in it. "It's a secret," she always says.
هذا العام، أصبح عمر إليف ثمانية عشر عامًا. تقول الجدة أخيرًا: «اليوم ستتعلّمين.»
This year, Elif is eighteen. Grandma finally says: "Today you will learn."
ترتديان المئزر وتدخلان المطبخ.
They put on their aprons and go into the kitchen.

Chapter 2
أولًا، تقطّع إليف بصلتين وثلاثة فصوص ثوم.
First, Elif cuts two onions and three cloves of garlic.
تبكي كثيرًا بسبب البصل. تضحك الجدة.
She cries a lot because of the onions. Grandma laughs.
ثم تقليان كل شيء بزيت الزيتون في قدر كبير.
Then they fry everything in olive oil in a big pot.
تضيفان الطماطم والماء والملح وقليلًا من السكر.
They add tomatoes, water, salt and a little sugar.
تهمس الجدة: «والآن السرّ»، وتفتح علبة صغيرة.
"And now the secret," Grandma whispers, and opens a small box.

Chapter 3

تتذوّق إليف الحساء. طعمه تمامًا مثل أيام طفولتها.
Elif tastes the soup. It tastes exactly like her childhood.
تكتب الجدة الوصفة على بطاقة صغيرة وتعطيها لها.
Grandma writes the recipe on a small card and gives it to her.
«الآن السرّ لكِ. ستعلّمينه يومًا ما لأحفادك.»
"Now the secret is yours. One day, you will teach it to your grandchildren."
